Review of the January 2002 Program

"Organizational Terror - Prevention and Reaction"
presented by Joe Lacroix
President, Organization Development, Inc.

Comments from attendees:

"Did not realize that according to OSHA, workplace violence has emerged as an important safety and health issue in today's workplace."

"Timely and Relevant."

"Joe Lacroix provided a great deal of information in a short time in an open, relaxed, and participative program."

The January program was certainly timely and relevant in the light of what we see and hear in the news reports about "terrorism." Yet, many people have not really given much thought about "Organizational Terror." The OSHA data shows harassment, intimidation, sabotage, assault or homicide are a few examples of organizational terror. Its most extreme form, homicide, is the second leading cause of fatal occupational injury in the United States. Nearly 1,000 workers are murdered, and 1.5 million are assaulted in the workplace each year.

Joe Lacroix presented Case Study summaries related to organization terror for the program attendees to read, discuss and reflect upon. He showed a video clip of a local event that was an example of organizational terror. The video clip stimulated a very interactive discussion with the audience. Joe Lacroix years of experience as a trainer and easy going style of presentation put everyone at ease in spite of a very serious topic.

How to recognize the symptoms that can prevent these traumatic events from happening is what Organization Diagnostics, Inc. (ODI), can do for organizations. Do check http://www.ltodi.com/ for more information on ODI, Inc.

Everyone had an opportunity to check-in, meet each other, enjoy a nice warm meal and participate in the program. Michael Fitzgibbon, VP for Marketing added to the camaraderie of the program by providing the "Ice-Breaker." Bonnie Hargett - VP of Communications assisted Becky Washburn - VP for Programs in putting balance into the evening's program with some light-hearted "Stress-Relievers" for door prizes. Most sought after were the "Trainer's Stress Survival Kit" that were also give for door prizes. The overall feedback from the attendees was "excellent! "

The program was very well attended considering it was a cold wintry evening and the first program for the year. It was an excellent turn out by the 2002 SEVA ASTD Board Members. SEVA ASTD guests were warmly welcomed by all, especially VP- Membership, Robert Rendin who had a "hospitality table" complete with flowers, interesting "type" nametags," and most importantly, membership information.

Thank you for joining us for the January program. We hope that you will be able to enjoy the great programs in the New Year, meet like-minded colleagues and discover opportunities to serve our communities. Do check your newsletter or the SEVA ASTD web site for upcoming events. If you would like to recommend or propose a speaker, do contact Becky Washburn at 479-2392 or bkywashburn
